Design Modifications:

The skylight is kept at 4’ tall. Ceiling panels are still used. The light shelves are still in use but now the shelf is extended another foot into the interior making it a 3’ wide light shelf.

South side

- Floor: 40%

- Walls: 70%

- Ceiling: 50% - 70% panels

North side

- Floor: 40%

- Walls: 70%

- Ceiling: 50% - 70% panels

Recommended for day lighting

- Floor: 50%

- Walls: 70%

- Ceiling: 90%

Analysis:

Extending the light shelf further into the space has little effect on reducing the perimeter lighting levels. Because the amount of window above the light shelf is so small in comparison to the area of window below the light shelf, widening the light shelf has little effect. However, with the use of blinds or transition pieces at the edges of the glazing where the window meets the side walls glare could be reduced, lighting levels lowered at the perimeter, and the interior lighting would not be sacrificed.
