Survey Results
To complete a survey of the project area, we did two things: a physical inventory to get a sense of the scale, type and location of dumpsites and a series of interviews to get a better idea of year-around dumping, costs to agencies and other things that we may have missed.

Physical Inventory

A physical inventory was conducted over the course of a term to get a sense of the dumpsites in the area. GPS coordinates and pictures were also taken for each dumpsite.

We looked for a variety of things, including:

  • Access (i.e. road type, available parking
  • Existing deterrents
  • Age of site
  • Frequency of dump events
  • Type/Layout/Severity of site
  • Composition
  • Quantity of trash
  • Complicating factors for cleanup

Maps will be produced showing dumpsites and their locations.

Interviews

Interviews were given to a total of 14 staff members from the Forest Service, Army Corps and State Parks. These were people that worked directly, and had experience with the problem of illegal dumping in the project area.

We inquired on the following topics:

  • Dumpsites (including type and location)
  • Cleanup (including time and costs per agency)
  • Enforcement
  • Prevention
  • Words of Wisdom

The information given will helped supplement missing information from the physical inventory.
