This website is presented for consideration of the collaborative proposal between Dr. Anita M. Weiss, Associate Professor, International Studies Program, and the Social Science Instructional Lab/Academic Web Publishing for the large-lecture undergraduate course INTL 240, Perspectives on International Development. Collaborative Partners Professor Weiss' research addresses comparative international development concerns from the vantage point of the interconnection between gender, cultural and economic transformation, and the changing global sociopolitical system. Her research today is focused in two major directions: global policies being developed to empower women, and Muslim views on women's human rights. Her current project, "Islam, Gender and Human Rights: State Responses to International Agreements," is analyzing the ways in which global human rights instruments (e.g., CEDAW, Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Platform for Action) influence state actions, particularly those of Muslim states, and the resultant applied, locally acceptable definition of women's human rights in Muslim contexts. The project is exploring how Malaysia, Pakistan and Tunisia are responding to international human rights agreements, specifically those affecting women, in their national laws, policy and development planning processes and related institutions. Professor Weiss is analyzing the extent to which these legal reforms affecting family laws and other actions being taken to enhance women's political and economic empowerment in the development process actually serve as a means of further securing their essential human rights. It is on this current research that this proposal to transform INTL 240 is based. Cathleen Leue, Director and Cerise Roth-Vinson, Assistant Director, Social Science Instructional Lab (PLC 72) The Social Science Instructional Lab (SSIL), created in 1989, is a full-service collection of an instructional computer lab, advanced GIS computer lab, Data Services Lab, Distance Education classes, university-wide web publishing and a Mobile Projection service for classroom instruction. SSIL provides integrated computer support and training for social science faculty and courses that utilize computers as part of the curriculum. The lab and support staff specialize in five core areas: instructional technology curriculum development, social science research, statistics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and web publishing. SSIL offers extensive and excellent international data sets that could potentially be used by students for data analyses in INTL 240. SSIL provides the necessary technical support as instructors seek new ways to add web-based technology into the core components of their curriculum. Proposals such as this one provide an opportunity for SSIL to work proactively with new faculty who have not previously used SSIL resources for such innovative courses. Vicki Silvers, Academic Web Publishing Coordinator, Social Science Instructional Lab (PLC 72) Academic Web Publishing, established in 1994 as a service offered through the Social Science Instructional Lab (SSIL), provides professionally designed web pages to the University of Oregon community at a free or nominal cost. Examples of projects include faculty course websites, digitization of complex research for web-based presentation and creation of department or administrative websites.
