Stipend This stipend will be used during Summer 1999 for Cathleen Leue, Director and Cerise Roth-Vinson in the Social Science Instructional Lab, to coordinate and consult with Professor Weiss on the implementation of technology into INTL 240. |

GTF Appointment International Studies will hire a .4 FTE GTF to work with Professor Weiss on developing course materials during Summer 1999. Responsibilities of this GTF will include scanning appropriate materials for application on the Web, conducting Internet searches to create links with countries and organizations necessary for the research modules. This GTF will also recommend library materials for library acquisition. International Studies will hire a second .2 FTE GTF to provide technical expertise for this project in Fall 1999. This GTF will work closely with Professor Weiss to monitor the web-related components including discussion forums and publication of student reports. |

Student Assistants The Social Science Instructional Lab will hire student assistants (2 or 3) to provide technical support directly to students during the term in which this course is taught. The Student Assistants will also make themselves available for student consulting on data presentation during the course lab sessions. It is anticipated 145 students will be enrolled for this course. |

Web Publishing Intern with The Web Publishing Intern, supervised by Academic Web Publishing in SSIL, will be responsible for collaborating with Professor Weiss and the course GTF to design and administer the course website. Once created, the website will exist as an internationally-accessible database documenting human rights agreements and implementations. The Web Publishing Intern will be hired during Summer 1999 and will continue for Fall 1999. |

Collection Development These funds will support the acquisition of various human rights documents and subsequent countries' implementation reports and other international data in Knight Library. Other data will also be made available (as appropriate) through the Data Services Lab in conjunction with SSIL. The collection development funds will provide necessary resources for the addition of documents not readily available to students. The library collection development will be coordinated with assistance from Tom Stave in the Knight Library. These materials will become part of the Knight Library collection and will become part of the Knight Library's permanent collection. |

Software The Social Science Instructional Lab and Academic Web Publishing will purchase 5 copies of Macromedia Flash v. 3.0 to increase availability of high-end web technology software that can be used to enhance the dynamic interface of data delivery on the web. |

Instructional Technology Tools The Social Science Instructional Lab will be responsible for the acquisition and implementation of several instructional technology tools that are currently unavailable to faculty members in social sciences and, in particular, the International Studies Program. Our goal is to use funding from this grant to acquire the necessary tools to make this course and other potential courses sustainable. SSIL will purchase a document camera (ELMO 700-AF) that will be used by Professor Weiss in this course to project primary documents in front of a large-lecture class. SSIL's long-term goal is to make the document camera available to faculty through a mobile service where SSIL employees provide the setup and delivery of instructional technology tools directly to classrooms as a free service. In addition, we will purchase a digital camera for use by International Studies faculty and students implementing technology into their courses. The International Studies Program will also purchase a full-page color scanner for scanning course materials for the interactive website. |

Travel Stipends Three guests will be invited to speak on current human rights issues. An honorarium, local hospitality and travel expenses will be provided through funding made available by this grant. We anticipate inviting a United Nations Human Rights rapporteur from New York, a professional from eithe the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) or World Bank in Washington, D.C., and a representative from Amnesty International (most likely from San Francisco), depending on availability. |
