The following is a brief summary of the actions taken by Senate President Gilkey pursuant to the directives of the Senate Executive Committee following the meeting of 29 September 1999. The Senate President
  1. wrote to Professor Shiao, Professor Freinkel, Professor Simonds, President Frohnmayer, Provost Moseley, Vice President McDonald, Instructor Long, and Student Senator Grzybowski to remind them they are scheduled to participate in the Senate meeting 13 October 1999 Email1
  2. wrote to Provost John Moseley and to University President Dave Frohnmayer asking that they meet with Senate Vice President James Earl to take up the question of a tuition benefit for dependents of UO staff and faculties attending the UO; the Senate President's son enrolled at the UO in fall 1999 so the Senate President will be recusing himself from substantive discussions on the issue.   3. asked Greg McLauchan to survey the members of the UO Senate concerning possible future agenda items Email3
  4. appointed Professor M. Paris as the Senate Representative to the InterCollegiate Athletic Committee [term ending June 2001] and notified Secretary of the Faculty Gwen Steigelman and Special Assistant to the President Dave Hubin of the appointment Email 4
  5. appointed Nathan Tublitz as a member of the Senate Budget Committee term ending June 2002, notified Provost John Moseley, University President Dave Frohnmayer, and Convener of the Senate Budget Committee Wayne Westling of the appointment, and respectfully suggested that the Senate Budget Committee consider the request by Ann Tedards that the Senate Budget Committee take up the matter of faculty salaries Email5
  6. asked Senate Executive Members Nathan Tublitz and Greg McLuchan to determine who the Senate President should contact to arrange for a brief report to the Senate in November concerning the River Front Research Park Email6
  7. created the special ad hoc committee to study committee structures on campus. This will be chaired by Senate Executive Committee Member Professor Nathan Tublitz. Special Assistant to the President Dave Hubin and Chair of the Committee on Committees Professor McGowan will also serve on the committee. It is anticipated that this ad hoc committee will draft suitable legislation to be considered at the 1 December 1999 meeting of the UO Senate. A student member will be appointed subsequent to the meeting of the Senate President with the Student Senate on 6 October 1999 Email7
  8. wrote to Senate Executive Committee Member Barbara Jenkins to ask her to look into what report regarding the Graduate School was desired Email8
  9. directed Senate Webmaster Peter Gilkey (of Deady Spider enterprises) to
    1. update the meeting times of the Senate on the web page to show a meeting 1 December 1999 and 30 November 2000. Senate bylaws specify the Senate shall meet the second Wednesday of each month. With the new fall schedule, this is not possible in December.
    2. update the information on the committee pages of the senate home page
    3. update the agenda for the 16 October 1999 meeting of the Senate to indicate a presentation by Senate Executive Member Student Senator Jeremy Grazbowski concerning the corporate code of conduct
    4. enter an agenda item for the November agenda of the senate relating to a report by James Earl dealing with tuition benefits
    5. enter an agenda item for the November agenda of the senate giving a report by Greg McLucan dealing with the proposed survey of Senate Members concerning proposed agenda items. See Email3
    6. enter an agenda item for the December meeting of the senate giving a report by Nathan Tublitz concerning the ad hoc committee to study committee structures - see Email7
