Presumably under the new budget structure, this is a question that could be dealt with internally at the UO without it becomming a system wide matter. I believe the question was raised during the process for change. Professor Frohnmayer urged the faculty to send their children to the UO at a meeting I attended last spring. Surely such a policy of education benefits would be consistent with his admonition. Let me add that I have taken his advice to heart; my son George started the UO this fall as a French major - he is having a great time (so far!). For this reason, however, since I would be directly impacted by such a policy, it seems inappropriate for me to be involved directly in the discussion. Since Senate Vice President James Earl first brought the matter to the attention of the Senate Executive Committee, I have asked him to coordinate our efforts on this matter. I should be most grateful if you or an appropriate senior member of the administration could meet with Senate Vice President James Earl (English) concerning the matter and advise us as how best to proceed. Presumably the matter has been considered carefully by Johnson Hall and a great deal of time could be saved by this direct approach to the matter. At the request of the Senate Executive Committee, I have scheduled a report by Senate Vice President Earl on the matter at the November meeting of the Senate so time is of the essence. Peter B Gilkey (UO Senate President 1999/2000)
