Assignment 5: Emergent Form

Objectives
To explore architectural form-making with Boolean operations and discover emergent forms

Create 2 solid forms to work with (cone, box, letterform, etc.) or find 2 forms from the Course Disk.

Boolean Play:

Try superimposing the 2 forms in different locations and use Boolean operations to see what you can generate.

Plaster Cast:

Subtract one of the resulting forms from a box. Rotate it and shift it until you find a pleasing result.

Slice:

Intersect one of the forms with a shaped wall to create a slice. Move the wall to until you get an interesting result.

Pattern generation:

Using either the Slice or the Plaster Cast, create a screen panel or frieze with repeating geometric transformations. Duplicate the panel as needed to show how it could be used.

Take an image of the resulting work and post it as "picture5.GIF" on your Web page.

For the ambitious:

  • Design your screen or frieze panel to be used in your pottery gallery.
  • Install the panel or panels
  • Adjust the lighting to show off the panel relief.
  • Collage images of the renovated gallery into one "picture5.GIF" for your webpage.
