One of the major lessons learned from this case study is that the easiest way to minimize summer solar heat gains is to minimize east and west facing fenestration. The pattern of the sun for these orientations has a greater potential for large solar gains than the north and south sides. Another lesson is that all east, west, and south facing windows must be carefully designed for sun shading. Even a less than ideal design will significantly reduce cooling loads.
