The east and west oriented window assemblies are less effective than the south orientation at excluding summer solar heat gains. This is indicated by the percentage of potential solar gain blocked, and by the percentage contribution to total solar gains of each orientation. A redesigned sunshade could reduce summer solar gains by the equivalent of 1 ton of refrigeration capacity. Despite this fact, the architects showed very rational design reasoning for repeating the identical design on each orientation, taking into account economics, aesthetics, pattern of usage and daylighting. By providing any shading at all, they are already ahead of many architects in their quest for energy efficiency.
