The UO Senate Executive Committee (SEC) feels the principles embodied
in this document could form the basis of a "University of Oregon Policy
Statement". I have been directed by the SEC to form a Special Senate Ad
Hoc Committee to facilitate matters. I have the high honor and priviledge
of inviting you to serve on this committee and hope you will accept.
I anticipate only two meetings of this committee so I shall not impose
on your time unduely.
The first task of the committee is to prepare a draft policy statement to be submitted to the UO Student Senate and to the UO Faculty Advisory Council for comment; this process ensures input from elected student and faculty bodies before the document reaches the UO Senate. Upon receipt of these comments, the committee will reconvene, redraft the document (if necessary), and submit a final version for consideration at the 10 May 2000 meeting of the UO Senate. If subsequently adopted by the UO Ssenate, the document will be forwarded to University President Frohnmayer for him to consider for possible promulgation.
There is not much time. I shall announce the formation of the committee
and present our draft at the 8 March meeting of the UO Senate. The
final version with notice of motion should be presented to the 12 April
meeting of the UO Senate so action can occur at the 10 May meeting. Thus
we must move expeditiously. Consequently I have scheduled the first meeting
of the committee for Thursday March 2 from 1600-1700 in the Johnson Hall
Conference Room. At that meeting, we will draft the proposed policy statement.
To facilitate matters, I have created a preliminary tentative rough working
draft to start with - it is located on the web:
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~uosenate/dirsen990/dirextra/Adhoc.html
I hope you can accept my invitation to serve on this important committee.
The UO has a long tradition of shared governance - it only works if we
all participate. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further
questions.
