CHECKLIST FOR REVISING THE PARAGRAPH

Practice Assignment

  1. Does the paragraph have a clear topic sentence? Is the topic sentence the first sentence?


  2. Does the body have enough supporting details and evidence?


  3. Have all extraneous, unimportant details been omitted?


  4. Does the concluding statement tie the paragraph together by summarizing, interpreting, or judging the facts?


  5. Is the paragraph unified (all supporting detail relates to the main point)?


  6. Is the paragraph coherent (all the main and supporting points are clearly linked)?


  7. Is the paragraph developed logically (all details are arranged in a way that makes the most sense)?


  8. What kind of sequence does the writer use (spatial, chronological, effect-to cause, cause-to-effect, emphatic, problem-causes-solution, comparison/contrast--see Lannon, ch. 12, for additional information on these sequences).
