Zolotorofe/Zolotarev family
from Priluki, Poltava Guberniya
(now Chernigov Oblast)
in the Ukraine

Nathan Zolotorofe

Information about my Zolotarev ancestors can be found in old records from the city of Priluki/Priluki/Priluky, which is 83.5 miles E of Kiev (50.36 /32.24). There are records that the Zolotorev family resided there in the late 18th century until the early 20th century. In 1847 the city of Priluki had fewer than 2000 Jews. By 1897, there were more than twice as many (5722), although the great immigration to the United States and other countries had already started.

My great grandparents Nathan ZOLOTOROFE and Reva SAMBURSKY came to America with a passport issued in Priluki, Poltava, Ukraine, dated Sept. 15, 1890 and written in Russian, German and French. The passport included Nisson, his wife, Rifka Chaia Gersheva (daughter of Gersh/Hersh) and seven of their children: daughters Bassa (age 18) and Bogdana (3) and sons- Mowsha (17), Leiba (15), Salman (7), Gershka (5), Simcha (1). As you can see below, the names on the passport are different from their Hebrew/Yiddish names, as well as the American names they adopted later.
The family name seems to be spelled Zolotarev in the old country and Zolotorofe in the United States. However, on my grandmother Bessie's certificate of marriage, Brooklyn 28 November 1897, her name was listed as Basha S. Zaletaruf.
Some family names of people who married into this Zolotarev line in the Ukraine: Belikov, Brukhansky, Duvidova , Finkelshtein, Haft/Gaft, Kagan, Kranovsky, Mendelevich, Pertzov, Risin, Rokhlinsky, Safranovich, Sambursky, Veksilman, Vetsalya and Volsky.

Much of the early information on the family comes from 1855-1874 Russian records of Priluki, translated by Yefim Briskman. Also, there are 12 Zolotarevs listed in the Vsia Rossiia 1895 Business Directory. It is possible that the Zolotorov name originated from a relationship to the town of Zolotonosha in the Cherkasy Oblast. It sometimes is translated to Goldsmith.

In order to insure the privacy of relatives, I have tried to included only non-living relatives. If someone is included or excluded in error, please let me know and I will make changes.

Information about other families, other towns and genealogy can be found on the JewishGen web site and the Chernigov Gubernia web site.

The photo at the top of the page is my great grandfather Nathan ZOLOTOROFE. The photo was taken in Brooklyn, NY.
