Questions for the day 1.15.98

  1. What came of the experiments that had been started in Nicolas et al. 1993 Geology paper? That is, what is the minimum melt fraction at which "flow" can occur? Is permiability or porosity important in magmatic "flow"?
  2. Is there a way to detect areas of water influx for hydrothermal circulation on ocean floors?
  3. At fast-spreading ridges: if cracks open due to diking, but rarely away from the neovolcanic zone, how can water percolate downwards at the hot areas near the dikes? Shouldn't heat, and upwards moving magma, only allow an upwards flow of water in those regions?
  4. The predominance of sheeted dikes above the layered gabbros and associated sills suggests a fundamental difference in stress regime. How does it differ, is there a vertical change in stress or is there an episodic difference, possibly due to pulses of magmatic intrusion?
