Session Seven
Modeling III
Jan 28, 1996
Objectives: To understand how structuring graphic data affects the ability to manipulate it; To understand specific data structuring tools.
| Review | Ambiguity | CAD organizers | Project Planning |
 I. Review of Student Diagrams
(9:30-9:45)
 II. Ambiguity, Structure and Interpretation
(9:50-9:55)
Organizing as intellectual analysis. See graphic examples.
III. Structures for organizing CAD data
(9:55-10:10)
A. Layers
- Layers by material for rendering
 - Layers by building system (HVAC, Windows, Doors, Foundations)
 - AIA Layer standards (AR-WALL, AR-CONC)
 - Layers by system with components (Win-glass, Win-steel, Win-skylite)

Attributes of visible/ghosted/off, locked, snappable are in palette.
Use layers for systems and subsystems which have similar attributes, use objects for specific grouping of parts with different attributes within these systems.
TRY IT: Layering exercise
B. Object & Group Hierarchies
- From the Palettes menu, choose Objects.
 - Objects grouped and groups can be nested to allow control in editing.
 - Objects allow linking of parts for manipulation
 - Attributes of visible/ghosted/off, locked, snappable are in palette, similar to layers.

C. Symbols
- Redefinable symbols parallel the use of redefinable architectural types. Repeated objects can be defined once and the placed as instances or identical copies.
 - Most programs allow insertion of non-typical stretched objects and the editing of placed copies which lose their identity.
 - Redefinition allows quick modification of design qualities.

IV. Workshop on Symbol Definition & Redefinition
 (10:10-10:40)

 V. Project Planning
 (10:45-10:50)
- Gather information, drawings to scale, photographs
 - Write down your thoughts, objectives of the project
 - Reduce the scope to something doable that has NOT been done
 - Use Assignment 4 to plan basic modeling elements and how they go together.
