Solar Data

We collected data on the solar conditions at the Berkeley YMCA. The roof was surveyed and information on horizon obstructions at four points was collected using a solar transit.

Roof Plan

Sun Chart from Location 'A'

The sun chart shows obstructions on the horizon, shaded in grey. Since the gray area does not overlap with the time of maximum solar potential (shown in yellow), Location 'A' would be a suitable place for a solar collector.

This insolation chart shows the amount of yearly sunlight available in the Berkeley/Oakland area. The shaded numbers indicate the percentage of clear skies for each month.

This plan shows possible locations for solar collectors on the roof. A considerable amount of roof space would be occupied by the collectors.
