This area along the Middle Fork of the Willamette is ideal for setting up a base camp and doing a series of day rides. The Moon Point ride can be started at either Packard Creek, Sand Prairie or Secret Campgrounds. To get to the trailhead, head east from Oakridge 1.3 miles on Highway 58; turn south at the Hills Creek Reservoir sign. Take a right on Road 21, and stay on it for about 20 miles. If the reservoir is on your left, you are on the correct road. This description begins at Secret Campground.
From Secret Campground ride north on Road 21 until you come to Road 2129 and go right. Take a deep breath and begin the ascent up the gravel road. You will pass many road junctions, but keep going until you reach Road 439 and take a right. Find the trailhead 2 miles on the right side of the road.
You will be riding through some beautiful high elevation mountain hemlock and true fir forest. The trail can be a little soupy, from snow melt or rain, so please be aware of minimizing your impact.
After you have ridden for about 2 miles, you will come to a trail junction. The trail to the right goes to Moon Point. You can ride, hike, or bushwhack your way to the summit. The outstanding view from this point is worth the side trip and makes a good place for lunch.
Now, time for the descent! The trail surface is generally good, although you may have to carry your bike across some rocky areas. The elk seem to be using the trail when it is wet--not good trail etiquette! So, the trail is a little bumpy in places because of wandering elk.
Shortly after passing the Youngs Rock trail junction, you will cross a couple of roads. The trail generally continues across from these roads, but it may take a little looking to find it. You'll come out on the pavement at Campers Flat. Except in winter, good water is available from Camper's Flat Campground from a hand pump. Ride the road back to your car.
