Wright 2015 Turkey Pictures

We visited Turkey in April 2015 in the company of our guide, Yunus …zdem’r, who knew what we wanted — hiking, history, and a sense of the Turkish culture — and provided those and more.

The general plan of the 10-day trip was to start at Safranbolu, a UNESCO Heritage site near the Black Sea northeast of Ankara, and work our way south through the Hittite country and Cappadocia to Tarsus, where we'd meet up with Leslie's daughter.

Of course we took hundreds of pictures, mostly just as tourist reminders of the places we'd been. We thought about breaking them into categories — flora, structures, antiquities, trails, etc. — and in the end decided simply to present some of them to you in chronological order. To see all the pictures, click on the first link below to open a sort of slide show. Click on any small picture to see it blown up. "Next" and "Previous" will navigate through the whole set, and clicking the funny little house-like icon will take you back to the full thumbnail collection.

To get back to this page from thumbnails, click the "back to main directory" link.

The pictures just show some of what we saw, of course, and don't convey any sense of the history involved, or how things relate to each other. You'll have to take our word for it that it was a wonderful trip. And also that we were absolutely safe at all times. Fears of traveling in Turkey now are baseless, and the dollar is strong against the Turkish lira. What's keeping you from going there yourselves?
