starship-design: stellar metals

Does anyone know how the metallicity of a star would affect the amount
of ore its satellites would hold?   is this known at all? i can think of
a mechanism for both an inverse and a direct correlation. Either a high
metallicity indicates that the star retained most of the metals for
itself (inverse) or the high metallicity of the star means that the
planets got lots of metal too. (this is my guess, but what do i know) 
or am i oversimplifying is the relationship more complex.
