Thesis Generating Exercise, Essay # 3 or 4, Comparison and Contrast

1. State what you are going to compare and contrast.  Note:  As this essay will be fairly short, do not try to compare and contrast one entire novel to the other, or one entire movie to the entire novel.  Use the list of the elements of fiction covered in class and in the reserve readings to narrow your focus.

2. What is the main point you will make by comparing/contrasting this particular element?

3. List the similarities between the element in the book and the movie or between the element in the two novels.

4. List the differences between the element in the book and the movie or between the element in the two novels.

5. Are the similarities or the differences more significant?

6. Write a thesis statement that mentions the author(s), book(s), and/or movies and that introduces the element that you will write about, and why/how that element is important in enhancing the reader’s understanding of the works (i.e., why is this point significant?

7. Where in your draft will this thesis be introduced?
