Expectations

Student Responsibilities

1. Attendance is expected: A lot of the material is cumulative--meaning that concepts are built one upon another throughout the term.  If you miss class or lab, you risk missing vital information that is likely related to subsequent material.  If you are having difficulty understanding the material, please contact your instructor or lab TA as questions arise.

2. Come to class prepared: Lectures will cover material from the readings and labs.  Whether material is covered in class, is assigned in the reading, on-line instruction, or is part of a lab it is all "fair game" for the exams. Unannounced quizzes may be given in class to test that students are keeping up with the readings.

3. Notice the dates for the scheduled exams and lab assignments: It is the student's responsibility to take the exams and turn in assignments as scheduled.  If you are unable to take the exam at the scheduled time, you must notify the instructor ahead of time and be prepared to document your  excuse.  Missing an exam or assignment due date without proper notice and instructor consent may result in a loss of points.

4. Practice common courtesy: Cell phone use (including text messaging) surfing the web, reading the Daily Emerald, continuous conversations with your neighbor-- all are annoying and distracting to me and many of your classmates... don't do it.  I will likely ask you to stop and you may find this embarrassing or uncomfortable.  If you don't stop the disrespectful behavior I will ask you to leave.  Be an adult.  If engaging in these types of activities is more important than paying attention and participating in class then please--don't come!  Feel free to nap at your own risk,  as long as you do not snore or talk in your sleep. I have left students sleeping in the classroom only to have them awaken later in a physics class.

Students with Disabilities

Students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities are encouraged to contact  Disability Services in the Office of Academic Advising (346-3211).  If you have a  documented disability and anticipate needing accommodations in this course, please make arrangements to meet with me soon.  Please request that the Counselor for Students with Disabilities send a letter verifying your disability.

Academic Dishonesty

All work submitted in this class is expected to represent each student’s own individual efforts.  Additionally, all students have the right to uninterrupted instruction.  Therefore, academic dishonesty and intentional disruption of instruction will not be tolerated.

In the Schedule of Classes, you will find a summary of the Student Conduct Code.  The Student Conduct Code describes both academic dishonesty and intentional disruption of instruction as follows:

(1) Dishonesty, including academic cheating, academic plagiarism (submission of the work of others for academic credit without  indicating the source), or knowingly furnishing false information to University officers of instruction or administration.

(2) Intentional disruption, obstruction or interference with the process of instruction, research, administration, student discipline, or any other service or activity provided or sponsored by the University.

No notes in any form (on paper,  your body appendages, cell phones, PDA's, etc..  No "wandering eyes" during exams.  No hats may be worn during an exam.  If I catch you cheating I will confiscate your materials and ask you to leave.  I will also file a complaint with the student conduct office.  I hate paper work so please don't make me do this.  I get very cranky.

If you have any questions about the honesty or integrity of an act on your part or on the part of a classmate, please feel free to talk to me.
