Course Description:
Investigation of approaches in teaching general music that were
developed by composers Orff and Kodaly. Readings and laboratory
experimentation on performance skills.
Objectives:
1. To stimulate thinking concerning a systematic approach to experiencing and teaching music in your personal and professional life.
2. To sing and learn American and non-American folksongs which are applicable to a sequential,general music program in schools.
3. To discuss curriculum development of the Kodaly, Orff and other
methods and how they relate to state (CAM/CIM) and national (MENC)
standards.
Texts: Choksy, L., Abramson, R. M., Gillespie, A. E., Woods, D. (1986). Teaching Music in the Twentieth Century. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, Inc.
Assignments:
1. Attend class and participate actively.
2. Complete reading of the assigned texts and relate to state (CAM/CIM/PASS) and national (MENC) standards.
3. Summary paper (4-8pp.) on the four methods. Due Dec. 2.
4. Additional projects:
a. Lead class in solfa singing with hand signs.
b. Compose new children's songs or arrange
extant tunes for classroom use.
c. Write 4 lesson plans in four methods.
d. Teach 4 lesson plans in four methods.
e. Develop a set of materials useful in teaching with one method and follow state benchmarks by grade levels.
f. Keep an organized notebook or binder with class notes, handouts and assignments. Turn in during last week of classes.
g. Practice ear training through taking rhythmic and melodic dictation quizzes.
h. Practice inner hearing by performing 2-part music with your voice and piano.
i. Memorize 30 folksongs and sing them to the instructor. If a
game is used with the
songs, explain how to play it.
Grading: Determined by a contract submitted by the student during the second week of the term and agreed upon by the instructor. The contract should have all assignments listed above. An "A" grade should exhibit extra evidence of scholarship determined by the student and approved by the instructor as well as all assignments listed above.
