general history/cultural background:

  • Denis Hollier, ed. "A New History of French Literature" (Harvard UP, 1994). 1,000 pages (in English) covering French literature from medieval to modern times. First-rate, original critical readings of key moments and works. A fabulous resource I use constantly.
  • Robert Mauzi, ed. "Precis de littérature française du XVIIIème" (PUF, 1990). A concise, chronological survey of 18th century French literature within its socio-historical context.

Dictionaries

  • Harrap’s French/English (the bigger the better)
  • Le Petit Robert: A MUST. Excellent for synonyms as well as a great source for citation and word usage.
