Final Examination for PS301 Art & the State, Fall 2002 Instructions:
Write a 1,000-1,200 word essay on either f the following topics. You may turn in
your exam between 11 and 12 a.m. on December 13, at Prof Kraus’s office (821
PLC). Because this is a take-home exam, you may submit it whenever you are ready
by putting in Prof Kraus’s mailbox outside 936 PLC. You may also mail your
exam to: R. Kraus, Political Science, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon
97403. However, the exam must arrive by Friday, December 13. No e-mail
submissions, please. 1. Throughout the term we have
talked about the distinction between ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture.
In an international context, explain how the commodification of art leads
to a shift from labor intensive ‘high’ art into capital intensive ‘low’
art. Compare the flow of high and low art products in international trade and
their political implications. 2. Hollywood’s domination of
the film industry is an American victory in the global cultural marketplace. Why has Hollywood become so successful and what are the
