This beautiful handpainted miniature depicts a cavalry trooper of the mid-1800s. A good source for miniatures like this to paint yourself is Michigan Toy Soldiers.
Uniform of Mexican American War
Unlike the high boots depicted in Hollywood films, real field boots were only ankle height.
McClellan Saddle
Painting of Trooper and early Locomotive
The coming of the railroad created new patrol duties for the cavalry as Native Americans sought to challenge the Iron Horse. In 1888, the Buffalo soldiers of the 10th cavalry were even ordered to chase train robbers.
Surprisingly, the McClellan saddle was relatively comfortable, lightweight, and provided ventilation between the soldier and his mount.
