sac-class: meeting in Chicago

Hello everyone -

The last few months have flown by, and I apologize for the lack of communication and focus on our course development. I think it will be easier to gain momentum in the coming months after our discussions at Annual and with some draft material to consider.

Here is the information about our meeting time and place:

Sunday, 6/26 2:30-5:00 Palmer House, Cresthill Room

The official schedule lists the meeting going until 5:30, but we will need to end by 5:00 (I need to be at another meeting in the Palmer House at 5:00). I know that some people need to leave at 4:00. We had discussed the possibility of changing the day entirely, but all possibilities had some complications. There will be some significant changes in meeting scheduling for all of ALA beginning with Midwinter, which we'll discuss at our meeting.

I'll send out a more formal agenda closer to ALA, but here is generally what I hope to accomplish in our meeting time:

Discuss draft course outline -- what are our goals for the various sessions, what subtopics should be included, how can we incorporate exercises or activities, are we happy with the order and progression of topics
Time allotment for various sessions
Ideas about particular challenges/points of confusion for catalogers*
Review draft materials
Discuss meeting time for Midwinter and beyond
Assignments for post-ALA work

*I've been trying to track on this by saving questions about LC classification posted to Autocat. I'd like to ask everyone to think about this -- what are the issues that are confusing for catalogers who have some familiarity with LC classification and the basic tools? What questions come up from your catalogers? What mistakes do you notice on copy? I'd like to try to identify such topics and just make sure we address them somewhere in our materials.

I know I'm leaving some things out but want to get this out to you right away to at least confirm our meeting time. Please let me know if you think of other questions or topics to be incorporated into our agenda.
