Re: sac-class: length of the LC classification course

Lori, I'm replying just to you; not sure of protocol here. Feel free to quote me to the group.

The LCC class I teach at LC is five half-day sessions, which includes teaching how to search Classification Web and background on proposing new class numbers. The shelflisting class is now 6 half-day sessions, two of which are devoted to "end-stage processing", which I think is purely a local matter. So if the class is to include shelflisting, it's hard to see how it would fit into just one day.

I have trouble commenting on the modular system, except to say that I have never included K, M or G examples when I teach. I just leave them out completely. They might be worth an entire day of training, to be taught separately from the basic, introductory class, and would deal with just one schedule. I'm sure the law, music and map catalogers would have enough content for a full day. If you leave these three areas out and just concentrate on the other schedules, the work of the committee will be vastly easier. AALL may already do their own training, and perhaps the same with the music and map cataloging associations.

Lori,You should also know that I don't have a computer at home, have never used Power Point, and use Word Perfect instead of Word. Just FYI.

Regards. Hope we see each other in person sometime. Mary Kay Pietris
