Course Requirements

Students in Japanese literature will be expected to attend all lectures and do the reading assignments carefully and on time. You should be prepared to discuss these readings in a meaningful way in the weekly discussion sections. Final grades wil be made on a curve based on the accumulation of up to 560 points. Those points can be earned in the following manner:

WEEKLY DISCUSSION SECTIONS -- You will be expected to attend the section for which you are registerd. We cannot guarantee that you will get credit if you attend a different section. If you must attend a section other than the one for which you are registered, it is your responsibility to arrange that with the Teaching Assistant in advance.

You will receive 3 points for being present at each discussion. You can earn an additional 1-7 points for contributing to the discussion. This assignment of points will be done at the discretion of the Teaching Assistant. Discussion sections will not meet during the first week of classes nor during Memorial Day week. At the end of the term your total number of discussion points will be doubled for a maximum of 160 points.

MIDTERM EXAM -- The Midterm Examination will be given on May 4. The questions will be based on a familiarity with both the readings and the lectures. The Midterm will be worth 200 points.

FINAL EXAM -- The Final Exam will be an essay and short answer exam. It will be inclusive, covering all the material studied during the term, but greater emphasis will be on post-midterm material. You will have two opportunities to take the Final Exam and may choose whichever suits your convenience. Those wishing to take the exam early may do so on June 8 at the regularly scheduled class time. Otherwise it will be offered at the regularly scheduled final exam time which is 10:15 a.m. June 14. The final exam will be worth 200 points.

ADDITIONAL CREDIT -- Students wishing to earn additional credit can receive up to 20 points by writing ONE five page response paper.
