Answer the following four questions.  Do not select the same writers for both questions #1 and #2.

 

Take home final due: Thursday, December 6 by 10:15am at PLC 365. PAPERS MAY BE LEFT UNDER THE DOOR AT PLC 365 ANYTIME BEFORE THIS.

 

1. The writers we have studied take different positions on the question of what leads to great writing (or great art). Some seem to think that nature or genius is the most powerful source of great literature. Others seem to believe that a balance of natural ability and learned craft is needed. Others would add practice, or exposure to great minds, or other factors. Examine and evaluate the positions and arguments of at least two different writers who explore interesting dimensions of this question. Three pages.

 

2. The writers we have studied also take different positions on the question of the relation of beauty (or the aesthetic domain of literature and art) and goodness (or the practical domain of ethics and social life). They also take different positions on the question of the relation of beauty (or art) and truth. Choose one of these questions, and examine and evaluate the views and arguments of at least two different writers on the question. Three pages.

 

3. Explain what you believe to be the most important contribution to literary criticism of each of the following figures.

A. Aristotle

B. Augustine

C. Vico or Hume

D. Kant or Hegel

E. Shelley

F. Nietzsche

One paragraph each.
