Dealing with Application Questions:

Here are some questions to ask yourself, to help narrow down to correct test:

What is the research question?

Is the question about association (correlation, chi-square for independence) or prediction using correlations (regression)?

What are the variables here?

Is there a quantitative dependent variable, or are there only frequency counts of how many people are in different categories (chi-square)?

How many independent variables are there, and how many levels? (Helps discriminate between t-tests and ANOVAs.)

If a t-test, are population mean and/or variance known? (Helps to discriminate whether z-test, t-test for single sample, or other t-test used)
