Homework 5: T-tests (8 points)
To do "by hand" with calculator, showing all work (4 points):
A&A, Ch. 8 (pp. 176-177) : problems 3b&c, 5
A&A, Ch. 9 (p. 196), problems 1a&b, 2b&c.
[Note: For guidance if you have trouble, see answers to Ch8 3a & 4, Ch9 2a in back of book]
To do using SPSS (4 points):
1. Do t-test for paired samples [dependent means] on the Surgeons data (p. 111, SG). Print out results. Now do assignment III-C on p. 115 SG, print out the results for each rearrangement, and compare the results of the last two tables (which show the standard error of the mean differences, the t-value, the df, and the significance of t) with results for the original data. In a paragraph, explain what you have learned from this.
2. Following procedure learned in lab (SG pp. 130-134), do t-test for independent means for
A&A Ch.9, problem 4 (p. 197) using SPSS. Based on the computer output, answer the research
question and explain what you did. Calculate the approximate effect size and power using
formulas given in text, as directed in the problem.
Homework 6: ANOVA (7 points)
To do "by hand" with calculator, showing all work (4 points):
In A&A, Ch. 10 (pp. 227-228): problems 1b, 2b, 7iii, 7iv
[Note: For guidance if you have trouble, see answers to 1a, 2a, and 7i in back of the book]
To do using SPSS (3 points):
On page 152 of SG, do IV-1,2,&4, using Defendent's Guilt data from p. 148 SG. You will need the output for the original data (completed in lab) to do the comparison in IV-4. Be sure to identify clearly which output was produced by which step, and write on the output for IV-1 and IV-2 what the conclusion would be for the research question, and (if you have a significant difference) what the significance level would be.
