Part P: Maps and drawings in the manuscript of DumontÕs ÒPoeme en versÉÓ in the Bibliothque de lÕArsenal, Paris

For this copy of his mock-epic poem, Dumont made a frontispiece map similiar to those that introduce the Library of Congress copy of the poem (C-5 below) and the Ayer MS 257. But whereas the Library of Congress copy does not contain any other illustraions, the Arsenal copy includes a fold-out map of Natchez bound into it at the appropriate point in the second canto, and then sixteen pages of illustrations at the back of the small volume, most of which are keyed to the relevant page number in the text. Many of these illustrations are divided into two or three panels arranged vertically on the small pages of the volume, and are not titled. I have transcribed whatever words appear, identifying the animal, plant, or place. Most also have a page number indicating the place in the MS to which they belong. In the edition of the poem by Marc Villiers de Terrage, all the images are reproduced in black and white, and we provide the corresponding figure numbers from the Journal de la SociŽtŽ des AmŽricanistes de Paris, 1931.

ItÕs interesting that on the back of the page of the sixteenth illustration, and on the facing page, the first page of the endnotes, there is a palimpsest of an additional illustration, of a calumet du paix, a drum, a rattle, and then at bottom of page, two tomahawks. Then turning the page, to the middle of the four pages of endnotes, one can make out  at the top a bow, in the middle a cabane with thatch roof, and at bottom a couple more things difficult to discern.  These palimpsests seem to be from additional illutrations that lay between these pages.

Many of these maps are available from the websites of the French archives that hold them, and a few links are included. I will soon work on providing links or x-references to them on Prof. SteponaitisÕ webpage at <http://rla.unc.edu/EMAS/local-settl.html>

Maps on a large scale, of the entire Louisiana Colony, or of the Caribbean:

This map is very similar to A-1, including a similar title and the same coat of arms of Belle-Isle. A major difference is that this map, like C-3, includes a large Òlac remply des carpes monstrueusesÓ west of the Mississippi in the approximate location of the Atchafalaya Basin.

Similar in scope to A-1 and C-1, and including the Belle-Isle coat of arms, but more embellished, with many small trees, as well as the names of Indian tribes and the locations of key events in the history of the colony, such as the Òfort de lÕassomption ou lÕest M. de Bienville en 1739 et 1740 et ou il nÕa rien fait.Ó

The three maps in the GEM (ÒGuerre ƒtat-MajorÓ) collection all include a coat of arms different from those of Belle-Isle and of dÕArgenson which Dumont drew to accompany the dedications of his two manuscripts. This map, like C-2, is embellished with notes on the Chickasaw Wars as well as sketches of many animals. Jack Jackson has commented that ÒScientific mapmakers in France must have cringed with they saw DumontÕs primitive pictographs, and it is a miracle that so many of them have survived.Ó

The coat of arms here is distinct from the three others Dumont drew on other maps. This map has a lengthy Òexplication des chiffresÓ with entries 1-14 describing with a critical eye key places and events in the history of the colony, such as Òfort de lÕassomption ou lÕarmee a restŽ tenter pendant six mois au bout des quels on a donnŽ la paix aux ennemis.Ó The list concludes Òil nÕy a point a douter un moment quÕil nÕy aye aussi de riches minesÓ and is signed ÒDumont de Montigny.Ó

Similar to C-4, except here the ÒExplication des ChiffresÓ uses letters A-Z. Extends north to the Illinois country and the Missouri River

2 [perdu depuis 1948]

This is the only map Dumont drew of an area where he had never been. Nonetheless it is cartographically more accurate than C-1 through C-5, portraying shows quite faithfully the course of the river and its numerous tributaries across the modern state of Missouri. ƒtienne VŽniard de Bourgmont had explored the Missouri River and established Fort dÕOrleans in 1724 before returning to New Orleans in the autumn of that year. He sailed for France on the Gironde in September of 1725.  Although Dumont doesnÕt mention it in the ÒMŽmoire,Ó he must have met with Bourgmond or other members of his expedition and worked from their sketches or detailed descriptions during this period.  Perhaps it was during a visit to New Orleans from Pascagoula that he drew both of these maps, as well as C-9.

The six sketch maps in the Delisle collection most likely date from 1750-51, when Phillippe Buache confirms that Dumont was in Paris, and may have met with him and requested these maps. This one is based on his exploration of the Arkansas River in 1722 and includes the concessions near the mouth of the river as well as several other features he describes, including the Òbouillon dÕeau salŽeÓ and a Òpierre de marbre.Ó

Maps of concessions and towns:

Biloxi

C-8 - ÒBilloxyÓ Paris, Archives Nationales 6 JJ 75 Collection Delisle #14140

Comparable to A-4, A-5 and P-3, this map shows the camps of the concessions as they were in 1721.

Comparable to P-2, A-2 and A-3, this map portrays the coast from Mobile to Pensacola. Signed ÒPar M. Du Mont de MontignyÓ

Comparable to A-9 and P-1 but drawn with somewhat greater care, and including names of the residents next to many of the houses. These include: Sr. MacŽ sous-lieutenant, de la Loire,  Sr. Laforge, Beausejour, Laforest, Sr. Chauvin, Sr. Fauchet, le Sr. Rousin, Sr. Ladouceur, Sr. Mouton, Sr. Poulain, Frederique Chirurgien major, Sr. Le Clerc, Sr. DumenŽ, Sr. Villeneuve, Sr. Navarre, Sr. Ricard,  Sr. Lallemand, Sr. Pellerin , Couvreur, Cambrelot, Lebenux, Picard, Sr. Solarc, Derni, Rousseaux, Les Bohemes (3 houses), Maison de la femme chef, Sr. Dumont, and Sr. Roussin aux Tioux.

and a detail of the Terre Blanche concession at
http://www.louisiana.culture.fr/en/syst/syst_conc_c.html#ancre

Note that the other map on that webpage, of the Chopitoulas concession, is wrongly attributed to Dumont.

A detail of Terre Blanche is available at: http://rla.unc.edu./natchez/  entry A9.

Similar but more elaborate that A-7, showing the city, the Bayou St. Jean, and the surrounding forest, along with a ÒExplication des Lettres AlphabetiquesÓ including A through Z and 1 through 23. The opposite bank of the Mississippi is not shown, however. An inset at lower left is a map of the entire mississippi valley, quite similar to C-5.

Similar to A-7, but it has the Belle-Isle coat of arms also found on C-1 and C-2. Some dwellings are labelled, but there is no long Òexplication des chiffresÓ Moreover, it lacks the inset detail of how N.O. blocks were subdivided that appears on A-7 and in the MŽmoires historiques.

This map and C-21 are drawn in a handwriting and a sketch style that differs from DumontÕs work on all the other maps, and thus the attribution is tentative. However, the format here is very close to A-3, and the D___ would logially be Dumont.

Yazoo

C-24 - ÒCarte de la Rivierre des Yazoux ou YachouxÓ Archives Nationales 6 JJ 75  Collection Delisle  #14137

The contrast between this map and A-6 and P-11 is that this shows the length of the Yazoo River, with the fort and concession appearing as small sketches near the bottom.

2, p. 85, pl. XVIII

Appears to have been based on A-6, although the ÒExplication des ChifresÓ is not as lengthy.

MH-10. Ç Plan du Fort Rozalie des Natchez avec ses Environs È, vol. 2, p. 94, pl. IX

May have been based on A-9, although there is no ÒExplication des chiffres,Ó and the only habitations labelled are those of ÒMr. de RousinÓ and of ÒMr. du Sr. Chepard.Ó
