Upon completion of step 9, you will have completed construction of your data set, and (if you complete it before Feb. 26) have an opportunity to get some free feedback on the set-up of your printed-out data file. The additional steps (steps 10 on) for completing the Final Paper/Project will be made available after Feb. 26.

Step 9 instructions:

Now you need to score your items by summing them into four new variables.

In SPSS, with "Data View" open, click on Transform --> Compute.

1.

For "Target Variable" enter the variable name "Internal" and make sure this is a numeric (not string) variable. Under "Numeric Expression" enter "quiet+timid+cautious+modest" which enables you to add up the scores on these variables. Check that you entered the correct numeric expression. Then click OK.

Check on the data view that you have a new variable.

Note: "Internal" stands for internalizing -- and is supposed to represent tendencies to "internalize."

2.

Next, for "Target Variable" enter the variable name "Interna2". Under "Numeric Expression" enter "quiet2+timid2+cautiou2+modest2" which enables you to add up the scores on these variables. Check that you entered the correct numeric expression. Then click OK.

Check on the data view that you have a second new variable.

3.

Now click on Transform --> Compute and create a third variable.

For "Target Variable" enter the variable name "External". Under "Numeric Expression" enter "aggressi+argument+impulsiv+daring" which enables you to add up the scores on these variables. Check that you entered the correct numeric expression. Then click OK.

Check on the data view that you have a third new variable.

Note: "External" stands for externalizing -- and is supposed to represent tendencies to "externalize."

4.

Now click on Transform --> Compute and create a fourth variable.

For "Target Variable" enter the variable name "Externa2". Under "Numeric Expression" enter "aggress2+argumen2+impulsi2+daring2" which enables you to add up the scores on these variables. Check that you entered the correct numeric expression. Then click OK.

Check on the data view that you have a fourth new variable.

next...

Save your file, with a backup on your floppy disk. Make a note of its file directory (folder) location.

If you are completing this step before February 26 (when homework 4 is turned in), you have the opportunity to hand your data file in to your TA and get feedback on whether you have set it up correctly. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, print your data file on paper (likely to be about 4 sheets when printed out), and hand it in with your homework 4. Note: You don't get any points for turning in the file to your TA, just free early feedback.

Close the data file.

Step 10 (and following) will give instructions for carrying out a few analyses on the data file you have created. These analyses provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate that you can do a few basic types of statistical analysis using SPSS. When Step 10 is ready you will be able to access it by clicking below. The final paper/project is due on March 14.

On to Step 10!
