Instructions for Step 8

Go to "Data View" on SPSS using your file.

Enter ratings for variables aggress2 to modest2, one row at a time -- for the person indicated by the identifier under Code2. But this time your ratings will be for what the person is like when things are not going well in his/her life.

Be sure you don't type over the ratings you already did a few steps back -- when finished with a row, only go back about halfway to the left.

When you have completed ratings for all 30 people, save your file.

Then add one more variable; in variable view, click once on the name of the gender variable, then click Data-->Insert Variable. Rename this variable "well_kno" -- this file will be a rating of how well you know the person you rated. Use this rating scale:

2 - Assign this number if you know the person so well that it was easy to complete all the ratings.

1 - Assign this number if you had to guess on some of the ratings because you didn't know this particular person well enough (e.g., because you have never been around them when things were not going well).

Then go on to step 9.
