Lecture 09
Digital Design Tools
Univ of Oregon, Dept of Architecture, Intro to Architectural Computer Graphics
  Nancy Cheng, 204c Pacific Hall, 346-3674 nywc@darkwing.uoregon.edu
Objectives

  • To get an overview of the range of digital tools for architectural practice
I. Schedule, Assignments, Future Classes

A. Help Sessions in 4th Floor Studios

  • Wed. 11/27, 9:30-11:30
  • Wed. Dec. 4 - Tues Dec. 10, 3:30-4:30pm

B. Assignments

C. Other media classes. Focus will reflect interests of the professors, so students can be take more than one

  • 423/523 Media for Design Development
  • 424/524 Advanced Design Development Media

II.  Computers in Current Architectural Practice

Examples of Computer Applications and BuildingPhases

Pre-Design

  • Marketing databases
  • Geographical Information Systems
  • Desktop Publishing for Proposals
  • Building Programming

Schematic Design

  • Cost Estimating
  • Building Performance Analysis

Design Development

  • Product Specifications

Construction Documents

  • Drafting
  • Engineering Coordination

Construction Management

  • Tracking questions, change orders

Operation

  • Facilities Management

III. New Digital Tools

A. New Input Methods

Extracting 3D information from photos

B. New Output methods

1. Virtual Reality Modeling Language or VRML

  • platform independent 3D models
  • pieces can be exported from FormZ, connections need to be programmed
  • Art examples require plug-ins such as CosmoPlayer or Platinum Worldview

2. Quicktime Virtual Reality or QTVR images

  • simulate 3D space with tourable panoramic images
  • individual panoramic nodes can be exported in FormZ, placed into web pages with GoLive
  • links between nodes need to be created with Apple's QTVR authoring kit

3. Animation provides a way to show sequential experiences in a space or construction sequencing

4. Computer-Aided Manufacturing or CAD/CAM provide a direct route for getting digital information directly into material objects

5. Non-photorealistic Rendering gives a human touch to computer-generated graphics

  • Piranesi software gives a painterly appearance to digital models
