texts and readings for the course

The cost of computer and computer-related books is a chronic problem that we've tried to deal with by keeping required texts to a minimum. This means that, in all likelihood, you will have to use the Reserve Book Room for some of your readings.
The following required texts are available for purchase at the University of Oregon Bookstore and are on reserve in the Knight Library Reserve Book Room.
MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE GETTING THE RIGHT EDITION. OLDER EDITIONS MAY LOOK LIKE THE CURRENT, BUT THEY ARE OBSOLETE:

Recommended books:
The following books are highly recommended as reference and resource books that will be of help to you in the future. They have previously served as texts for the course. These, too, will be available on reserve in the Knight Library.
  • Harley Hahn, The Internet Complete Reference. 2nd Edition. Berkeley: Osborne McGraw-Hill, 1996.
  • Harley Hahn, A Student's Guide to Unix. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1993.

The "Optional Readings:"
Each of the classes has -- in addition to the required reading -- a list of print and online resources that we feel would be useful to look at for a range of reasons: the resource could simply be an Internet site used to illustrate the class session of the day; it could be articles that amplify the the required reading; or it could be merely a platform to other online resources. Recommended readings are just that, but bear in mind that -- despite what she says -- the student sitting next to you is probably going through the optional readings with a fine tooth comb.
