Welcome to GD99! If you have stumbled onto the file without knowing what you are doing, you might direct your browser to: http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~epederso/gd/gdhome.html Please note that I use the abreviation N for Navy and AF for AirForce. On the maps I will use F for AirForce (and P for People's Republic of Asia) because I only have room for a one letter code. To avoid confusions, try to think Navy, not Fleet, even though the unit type is the same across standard and Global. Final map: http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~epederso/gd/gd99/07Sp.gif ======== EOG statements === PR EOG Started off by sending out my usual introductions and worked out a deal early on to form a triple with RF and GA. This seemed to work out fine to begin with, GA built a arsenal and caused chaos in the Americas, and I captured all the PAcific islands with RF hitting Europe hard with US help. The war then turned against the US and as the US was being knocked back RF decided to stab me. I was warned before this by GA but I felt that RF would have too much to lose by stabbing me so early on. I was then in an alliance with GA and because of the stab I had to let GA move his forces through Asia, this allowed me to recover and help to eventualy finish RF and the US but gave Jef to much advantage in the end for me to stop him getting the solo. All in all a very enjoyable game, and one I would like to play again. I have sent Eric some ideas for a more complex version using nuclear winters but it may be too complex to be playable. All the best and thanks to all the players I have spoken to in this game. Stan ========== From: Samy Elias Subject: GD99 - US EOG The first half (roughly) of the game was interesting. But in the end it is apparent that Stan (PR) and Jeff (GA) were playing a different style of Diplomacy than I like. I'm used to cut-throat play, and people going for the win, not easy draws. Stan and Jeff seemed to be playing an 'unbreakable alliance' game, up until the last moment when PR's complete vulnerability to GA could no longer be ignored by Jeff. Jeff's offer to split the win *after* soloing seems to confirm this. Anyways, from the beginning. Got off to a rocky start with David (SA), when he kept trying to head into MAT, supposedly to head for EU. But we ironed things out, and had a very rational and binding alliance. I also started out with an alliance with Mike (RF). I hoped to get some gains in Europe. Pretty soon it was clear RF had a decisive lead. I kept telling PR to watch his back and protect himself from the eventual stab, but he seemed resigned to the idea of total reliance on RF's good will. PR also didn't talk very much. Except for one period of tense negotiation, I never got more than short, one-line answers from him, which usually told me nothing. Mostly, his messages were just his orders CC'ed to his allies. The war between SA and GA wasn't going well for SA, and for some reason the entire world except me and EU (he was falling) wanted to attack SA. Something about nuclear stigma, an odd phenomenon. As I have always said, I believe Arsenals are primarily defensive units, serving to creating barriers around oneself. As an offensive weapon they are weak, since they force you to hold to develop them, and can only be used to restrict your battlefield or destroy your gains. I tried to stay on RF's side, since I needed him as an ally. Otherwise my north was vulnerable, and defending it was costly. Since I had little choice I decided to trust him, but he decided to stab me. His stated reason was he was worried I'd bomb WSI. For the record I would never have done so (and never did), even when attacking RF, since WSI was one of the few gains I could expect in such a case. I fended him off, and my warnings to PR got more frequent. Then RF did something unexpected: right after attacking me, he stabbed GA *and* PR. I think this brought a *lot* of attention on him. He was basically taking on the whole world. Well then of course the whole world had to fight RF. The infighting which I believe Mike hoped for between GA/PR/US didn't happen when he wanted it to. The only anomaly was with SA-GA relations. GA insisted that SA move and leave his home centres unprotected to fight RF, and that otherwise GA would not fight RF. This is something that bothered me a lot; it was pointless manipulative blackmail. GA *had* to fight RF or RF would solo. Why ask for SA to practically hand his centres to GA as the price? Not subtle. I tried to balance the fight against RF while keeping GA restrained. The fight would benefit GA by opening vulnerabilities in me and PR and letting him get involved in areas where he could easily change alliances and grab centres, particularly in Asia. (PR ignored my concerns and open the Asian gates to GA units.) I helped PR regain his home centres, so that he could fight RF and face up to GA. I bombed CAM to prevent GA units slipping into North America. However, when GA bombed RUS, one of the gains I'd hoped to make, and sealing off Europe in the process (now his for the taking), I decided to act. SA had been replaced at this point, and I negotiated with Andrea to nuke GA. It almost worked, but I guessed wrong. I had also feared GA was also planning a pre-emptive nuclear strike on me, but I was wrong. I lost my arsenal, a crippling blow, but managed to make it impossible for GA to nuke me by destroying SAH and WAF. I also tried repeatedly to convince PR to cut GA's bombing my arsenal, but as with RF before, Stan had thrown in his lot with GA. PR then stabbed me, saying he and GA planned to share a two-way draw. The rest of the game found my desperately outnumbered forces fighting off the two superpowers. At the time it was obvious to me GA would win. I did my best, but once PR convoyed GA into NWT, and then even supported GA into CCA right when he was being stabbed by GA (!), it was all over. In fact, GA could have won, easily, one entire build phase earlier. It looks like he was serious about the two-way. Yikes. Like I said, not the kind of game I play. PR's last minute confused defense was pointless and doomed. The time to stop GA would have been long before that. I think I would have found the game even more pointless had it ended in a two-way draw. Overall, I never got too big in this game; I usually had to be reacting to someone else's solo attempt or defending myself. Fought to the finish, but with PR pushing GA to a solo, there was never a chance. Thanks to Eric for GMing. Despite my comments about this particular game, I think the variant is great! -Samy ======= UN comments on game: These comments from the UN are (almost) limited to the tactical side of the game. Discussing the tactical side of the game without reference to the diplomatic considerations is highly misleading, but what can I do! :-) All comments have been written as the game is being played, not in retrospect. Initial builds: A GBR sends a signal to the US/GA that there are plans to invade one or the other with a convoy soon. It would be an ambiguous threat if not for the N WEU/sc which clearly targets GA. 3 N's: When SA has seemed too powerful a power in some games, I have been tempted to add in the rule that max. 2 of any unit type can be built in any season. On the other hand, by the time this game started, I had decided that SA was probably not significantly more powerful than other powers -- unless he can trust both US and GA that is! The US 3 N build is unusual. An N in CCA is potentially a liability, so the build suggests the US may try for a more aggressive expansion. The PR 3 N build suggests reasonable trust of RF. To allow this trust to be somewhat possible, this game has pre-initial-build diplomacy, and I see the choice of 3 N's as a consequence of that. Africa's 2 F's is unconventional, perhaps signalling a willingness to help others. On the other hand, it could lead to AF's on the front line. On the other hand, not too many units on the front line need support during the first year, so if GA anticipates a shifting front line, this could be an advantageous build. W01 GA's WAF-EAF makes a clever move. If the EU attacks, there is initial defence of EGY possible, if not, SIO can be guaranteed a more interesting SC than MAD/SAF. This suggests that GA is interested in taking MAD/SAF more leisurly and enter into the Pacific theater immediately. EU makes clear the intention of attacking GA. However this means that a choice between the SC in GRE needs to be weighed against launching a more powerful attack with NAT c GBR-SAH, which gives no immediate SC. RF does not attack the PR! The temptation to make an initial movement attack against the PR is often too great to resist. On the basis of previous games, PR is actually fairly resistant to a 2 SC loss if in a defensive position, so an early RF attack needs to be quite definitive or both powers suffer. SEA-IND is a conservative move (compared to NIO) and sends non-aggression signal to GA. Moderare PR growth is assured. MAT bounce is inefficient, but harmless to both parties. With both N's against MAT it is difficult to imagine a trusting relationship there. Sp01 Elegant TUR for SCA swap. Works well with a clear EU attack on GA position. Bounce in EGY is fairly predictable and serves to allow a build in EGY with an AF in WAF for future support. GBR-GRE may well leave a unit stranded, but at least gives a build which is needed against the RF assault. On the other hand, under this circumstance, an initial AF GBR build would have served better. US/SA run the risk of having double bounces (MAT and AMP) in perpetuity.... SIO-QND/nc was my favorite move of the season. Limits GA expansion, provides a bargaining chip, and since SA did not move into SAT, there is no reason to hurry for SAF/MAD. If SA had moved BRA-SAT, then this move would have perhaps seemed reckless. On the other hand, unless SA could be sure that SUS-MAT would not be ordered, SAT was reasonably safe. Builds Sp01 Unclear what the AF ALA will be doing. N RUS/wc is a nice build. Should bring BAL more into play than in the last few games. Allows the possibility of a Fall convoy of A SCA to the continent. Otherwise A SCA is just stuck in a holding pattern. Obviously A YAK is a move threatening to PR, but then everyone is threatened by the RF having three builds.... The PR built less for defence against RF and more for expansion. PR will need to move to NIO with this configuration however which should lead to conflict with GA. On the other hand, the GA is currently concerned more with Australia and the Med. Either the GA commits to pressing North, or a bounce in NIO is likely. Moves Su 01 Moves W 02 SA bombing of SAF an error. SAT would have protected against a GA invasion. Since GA declined to build an arsenal, it should be relatively easy to organize unified opposition to SA, in which case SA needs a defensive position. Retreat to BRA is a dig-in survival retreat. Unfortunately the coming season is Spring, otherwise a retreat to ANT would have been interesting. A retreat to MAD would have required at least two units dedicated to dislodging that unit before the build season, and might thus have served as a defensive retreat as well. Builds Sp'02 Interesting that GA continues to waive the arsenal build. Suggests that allies can continue to not fear him too much. R SUS guarantees the loss of WAF. The US can just take out MAT as the first bombing operation. Much will depend on whether or not SA trusts the US to not bomb BRA in the Fall. It the US does take out MAT, then it is imperative that someone control both NAT and AMP by the end of Summer. This would allow Fall moves -CAR and -EUS. Without both of these moves in the fall, R SUS can bomb itself into perfect isolation. Of course if this is done, GA will have the perfect excuse to build an arsenal as only a bomb can eliminate R SUS at that point. In other words for Fall, expect control of both AMP and NAT by some anti-US alliance or expect GA to need to build an arsenal in the Fall. The bank of northern RF is interesting. Clearly only useful in an alliance, but then it can be devestating to the US, unless the US can manage a fall bombing of some R territory. This would only be possible if the US can keep GA out of MAT. In exchange for not bombing WAF? Convincing SA to send N BRA-MAT with support from AF MIW? (which would surely result in the loss of ARG). Summer movement 2102 NPA taken instead of AMP. This makes for a strong invasion by Russian units, but must assume that R SUS will not seriously harm RF. (Otherwise, ASP-AMP would have been the necessary move.) Since RF has no army to convoy to the US, the attack will be limitted to West Coast SCs. EN HUD is an interesting wildcard. It forces a Fall move of WUS-CCA. Since UF WUS could not be supported against NPA-WUS anyway, this is a relatively small cost. Since this is predictable, RF might offer to the EU that his unit go to GRE with support, although there seems little strategic reason for RF to keep the EU alive, it would allow a reduction of 1SC from the US whereas the US would otherwise be able to keep GRE (assuming the RF is ordering NAT-EUS in the hope that the US is not ordering R SUS b EUS). The PN retreat is a real setback. A disband might serve as well if PR is worried about an RF border incursion. Fall movement 2102: ====== Summer 2103: This was an interesting season. GA anticipates SAT-SIO by eliminating SIO. This will greatly affect the future ability to deploy units however. Presumably, SAT-MAD will be necessary howevermuch GA might rather advance that N to a front. Otherwise, MAD may remain unclaimed for a full year. Similarly, if GN PER moves toward the US, then SA will be able to rebuild which is clearly not in GA's best interest. The US played well for the support into BAL with an obvious RN retreat to WEU. Now GA can either use SAH to support retaking WEU or to bomb EUS. Everything will hinge on the PN NIO (which failed -CHS!). Anticipate an unsupported convoy EGY-SEU. RF and PR will be locked into a musical chairs battle for the next year or so. This is a common result with RF invades PR. The invasion looks simple, but if PR has AFs in INO/TAI/JAP (as it often does), the invasion often bogs down into something far messier than anticipated. Winter 04 GA made a tactical error with WEU. Moving TUR-MIE allows WEU to hold through the next build season. Since MEX/WUS cannot be taken with just the two GN's, this will severely limit GA's growth. Should still be able to build an F in the Spring to take Europe over the next few seasons. If the US moves WUS-AMP in Spring, this could allow a build, which could allow the US to expand into South American territory, which will be less than perfectly defended. JAP will become a pivotal space. US should offer to PR that F ALA be convoyed there in the Spring to support the retaking of PR's homeland. With 3 AFs working there, PR can count on recapturing the SCs. With a US AF in JAP, the US can be confident that GA will not be able to use a PR AF there to bomb the remaining US home SCs in Summer and Fall 2104. Which would ensure victory to GA and/or PR. Meanwhile, the stalemate in coastal Asia continues... If RF seeks KOR-KAM, RF gets no build and PR gets a build. So the better bet is for RF to give up on an expensive conquest of KAM this round. Unfortunately for RF, if GA/PR co-ordinate all their units, SEA cannot be defended. Since RF won't be able to build in the Spring anyway (and PR won't be able to build if RF doesn't take KAM) that doesn't matter much, so PR and RF need to focus on positional play. Sp04 With an AF in JAP, the US must take NPA in Summer 04 or risk losing both remaining home SCs to GA/PR bombing. Su04 US did well to move to COL for a guaranteed BRA. However, by failing to take NPA, the US will lose both remaining home SCs to PR (obviously not an anticipated stab). GA has captured AMP and will rely on PN WUS S AMP - MEX. This should pretty much finish off the US except for a difficult clean-up operation in Europe and the rogue unit in BRA (unless the US disbands that unit, which would probably be a mistake. BRA could eventually capture the forgotten MAD which remains neutral to this point! For F04, the US should probably retake WUS giving up MEX to GA. Moving ALA-WCA could destroy the PN in WUS although a retreat might manage the same more expensively. EAR-SCA and QUE S SPN - WEU/sc guarantees no disbands. This way the US remains strong in Europe even though expansion to SEU is unsupportable in the near future. GA's upcoming build presents some interesting possibilities. Each unit type has certain advantages at this point. GA is nearing a good position to stab PR. Possibly by Sp 2105. A F04 build in SEA will help PR tremendously on that front as well as against RF. Su05 RF's move to TAI was ill-conisdered. Always tempting to move into an SC when available, but a guaranteed dislodge and possible disband in the Fall speaks for moving to CHI-ASP, from there the navy can feast on SCs, possibly contolling 2 SCs (analogous to the US Navy in S. America), before another unit comes down to interfere. GA is clearly patient. No stab of PR and a very gradual improvement of position against RF/US. Slow victory must seem certain. Fa05 RF should be eliminated by Sp06. GA can solo with WSI, WUS, MEX, and all of S. America. (Don't forget that MAD remains an available SC). Unless PR is certain that GA does not want a solo, 2106 is the obvious time to control NIO as insurance against EAF bombing SEA and virtually guaranteeing a solo victory. The US cannot survive against a polar convoy so his only strategic hope is to convice PR to unite against GA by convincing him that GA will otherwise solo. As in regular diplomacy, a three-way endgame should in principle be fairly stable because two players should always gang-up against the leader (it seldom operates in such a pure game-theoretic way in practice). However, since GA is a nuclear power, a stable 3-way endgame is not very likely. If PR were to suddenly turn against GA and capture NIO, GA would be in a fairly precarious defensive position since PR could support himself into SPA. The counter ploy by GA should be to convince PR that he can bomb NIO for their mutual protection while moving NIO-CHS (ostensibly toward WUS). Once NIO is eliminated, GA can suffer a loss of SPA and still have a reasonable hope of an eventual victory. Spring 2106 GA's march toward a solo is looking more complete. PR surprisingly vacates Yakutskaya to let GA take the SC even though it is unnecessary and gains little advantage for an anti-US campaign. At this point only an alliance between PR/US would be able to stop GA since SEA can be removed by nuke at any point. MAD remains a neutral SC. The US may ultimately retreat there. Winter 2107 Interesting battle between PR and GA despite the continued co-ordination in N. America. There was a call for a draw which was rejected, although the plan was to put out the call again once two player remained. However, note that with 30 remaining centers (and 16 to win), the only way for a draw at this point is if 1) another SC is destroyed or 2) RF keeps SWE and agrees to a draw or 3) the US survives the next season and agrees to a draw or 4) GA and PR each end up with exactly 15 centers at the end of this turn (and both agree to draw rather than continue to fight). None of these scenarios is all that likely! Spring 2107: Victory for GA. PRs move to MON was quite odd. It pretty much guaranteed that GA would win no matter what other moves were made. ===== Eric Pederson epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu (no "n" in "epederso") Personal home page: http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~epederso/
