Statement of Research Objectives

Research Themes:

Mid-Ocean Ridge and Ocean Island Magmatism.  Many of the research projects in my group fall under the category of understanding the basaltic magmatism found at mid-ocean ridges and oceanic islands.  These sites are particularly advantageous for studying magmatism, as they allow us to examine how magmatic activity varies as a function of spreading rate, magma supply and lithospheric structure.  By comparing and contrasting magmatism at a variety of settings, our goal is to understand what controls the generation of melt and its transport to volcanic features on the Earth's surface.

Methods for Seismic Imaging.   Our group is also particularly active in developing tomographic methods for imaging earth structure in three-dimensional isotropic and anisotropic media.  We have developed robust methods which allow us to use delay time data from active sources, microearthquakes, or teleseismic events to image compressional and shear wave velocity structures.
