This will be group-learning exercise that hopefully will promote discussion as well as more in-depth learning among the class members. You should form groups of three or four individuals and plan to get together for at least 15 minutes to discuss the questions posed below. One member should be identified to write the group report and submit your response. Please make sure all group members are identified on the final report.
1. List the three types of plate-tectonic boundaries, and for each describe the major characteristics of that type of boundary. Include in your description possible mechanisms which might be the driving force for that type of boundary.
2. Describe the heat flow that you would expect at each of the major types of plate-tectonic boundaries. Briefly explain why the heat flow at each type of boundary is the way it is, based on processes that are likely taking place in the mantle beneath the boundary.
3. Using a map of the world (such as on the last page and inside-back cover of your text), identify by location and/or name, representative examples of each type of plate-tectonic boundary. Were possible, include representative examples in both continental and oceanic crust.
