Objectives:ï To become familiar with navigating, creating and editing in three
dimensional space.
ï To understand compositional ideas inherent in geometric sculpture.
I. Selecting and understanding the sculpture
Select a sculpture from the recommended list or find your own. Be sure to pick
something that you can create with the 3D primitives in Design Workshop. Find
reference information about the artist and look at other work he or she has done. Can
you find how the following design qualities are used?balance
rhythm
unity of parts
contrast
hierachy of parts
structureII. Draw the sculpture
Is there an order or logic to the how the work is organized? Just as with the two
dimensional exercise, identify the major pieces and the major construction lines or
axes.Find out exactly how large the sculpture is and block out guidelines or primitives.
Working in a top-down, step by step manner, refine the parts of on separate phases
(layers). Until you have carefully built up the level of detail.
