Session Nine
Modeling V: Designing with 3D CAD information
Feb. 4, 1997
Objectives: To understand the different kinds of 3D modeling data.
To see how 3D transformations can be used in the iterative design process.
I. Review of Student Work

TRY IT: Use Boolean operations to make an Eiffel Tower by
- opening eiffel.fmz from Session Nine of the Course Disk
- extruding a closed A-shape to make a long bar
- subtracting a void
- rotating the bar 90 degrees
- intersecting the two.
III. Designing with CAD
A.W orking within a framework of typology, computers help create alternatives:
- Parametric variations or adjusting lengths, quantities, angles (parameters) to adjust proportion, balance, hierarchy of parts.
- Geometric transformations
- Substitution of alternate symbols can help refine a design by adjustment of parts.
B. The computer can help us understand a project in new ways through:
- Different viewpoints exposing particular aspects
- Switching between god-like axonometric and naturalistic walk-throughs
- Isolating or juxtaposing separate building systems for examination
- Providing feedback on performance (i.e. quantity of materials, structural, HVAC, acoustics, lighting) See example of a bus terminal bay.
C. Increasing the chance of re-reading ambiguity can lead us to new directions.
- Work in 2D to increase fluidity: draw in 2D CAD or use Photoshop to sketch on renderings
- Change media:
- Sketch over hardcopy
- Use the CAD file to generate templates for a physical model
- Introduce serendipity or chance juxtaposition into the process.
- Get a partner to exchange projects for an hour to get a fresh outlook.

D. Take advantage of advanced 3D CAD transformations such as these in FormZ (tutorial #)
- Extending faces to join one another (19.8)
- Inserting holes, openings, faces or solids (21.2)
- Deforming 3D objects (13.3)
- Trimming and Stitching meshes (16.5)
