Modeling V: Designing with 3D CAD information

Feb. 4, 1997

Objectives: To understand the different kinds of 3D modeling data.
To see how 3D transformations can be used in the iterative design process.

I. Review of Student Work

II. Constructing CAD (originally in lesson 8)

. TRY IT: Use Boolean operations to make an Eiffel Tower by
  1. opening eiffel.fmz from Session Nine of the Course Disk
  2. extruding a closed A-shape to make a long bar
  3. subtracting a void
  4. rotating the bar 90 degrees
  5. intersecting the two.

III. Designing with CAD

A.W orking within a framework of typology, computers help create alternatives:
B. The computer can help us understand a project in new ways through:

C. Increasing the chance of re-reading ambiguity can lead us to new directions.

D. Take advantage of advanced 3D CAD transformations such as these in FormZ (tutorial #)
