Session Six

Modeling II

Objectives: To understand what makes successful diagrams, To learn modeling tools for the creation of diagrams

I. Diagrams

Diagrams have a purpose: to emphasize or explain. They edit out all but the essentials and carefully arrange these to convey a hierarchy of importance.

Get the special http for the EXAMPLE files.

Examine research into how computers can help in the diagramming phase.

II. Drafting

Starting with 2D functions limits the menus while allowing an overview of FormZ structures.

Setup: From the File menu, open a New Drafting Window. From Palettes menu, close all Palettes except Prompts. Under Options > Help > Drafting Tools turn off the Text, Dimension and Lineweight rows with Option + Double click

Load draft.zmn from the Course Disks > NYC > Shared Class Folder > Session Six folder.

A. Getting Control via restraining devices of Window Tool palette

  1. Reference Planes in Modeling
  2. Perpendicular lock in Modeling
  3. Grid Snap
  4. Angle lock
  5. Object Snap

B. Drafting Modifiers (Row 1)

  1. 2D drafting polylines & arcs
  2. 2D enclosure
  3. Area for selection

C. Geometric Primitives (Rows 2,3,4)

  1. Polygons. Rectangles constrained in stretching
  2. Circles & Arcs: smooth curves unless cut or exploded
  3. Lines (straight polygonal lines)
  4. Smooth curve vs. Controlled curve spline whose curvature is changed by control points
  5. Streamline: connected straight segments (Option Key)

D. Selection Sets (Rows 4 & 5)

  1. Topological Hierarchy
  2. Drafting: Area Generation of Boundary Shapes
  3. TRY IT: Create a series of 2D objects. Create an area which cuts through some of them. Follow the hand-out to see how to select different sets. Use the Self + Move command as a test.

E. Line Editing Commands (Row 7)

  1. Trim joins or cuts off two lines at a corner
  2. Fillet joins two lines with a radius
  3. Extend moves the endpoint of a segment along the direction of its length
  4. Parallel creates an offset line. Option allows a fixed parallel
  5. Enclosure replaces a single line with a bounding polygon of set width.
  6. Insert adds a point into a segment
  7. Break creates a gap in a segment
  8. Join brings two lines together at a corner
  9. Connect adds a segment between two vertices
  10. Explode changes special shapes such as circles, arcs and rectangles into segments

G. Self/Copy & Geometric Transformations (Rows 11 & 12)

III. Viewing

Setup: With Palettes menu, close Palettes except for Prompts

Working with Palettes example: Saving a new view

  1. From the Palettes menu, Open up the Views palette
  2. From the View menu, select the first presaved view called "z=60 x = 30".
  3. From the lower left Window Tool bar, use the Rotate View command, click on the +Z axis and drag the mouse on the grid to swivel the view. Fine tune the view with the other Window Tools if desired
  4. In the View palette, tap on View Name, then hit the Save button to give a name to the view you have found.

Add other views interactively:

  1. From the View menu, select the bottom choice: Edit Cone of VIsion which brings up a new window.
  2. Interactively move the eye point and target point.
  3. Click-drag on the title bar of the window for a pull-down menu and click on both Perspective and Clip Hither and Yon to interactively adjust the depth of field and the front and back clipping planes.
  4. In the orthogonal windows, drag the corners of the box to adjust tilt, depth of field and clipping planes.
  5. Click-drag on the title bar of the window and select Save View.
  6. Interactively reposition the sun if desired, previewing by click-dragging down from the title bar to Shaded Render
  7. To exit the Cone of Vision window, click in the close button on the upper left of the window.
