Objectives
To learn methods of model organization.
To understand how design variations can be generated using symbols

Description
Create a room or building model of your design studio project, a historical precedent or to illustrate material for another class. Use layers to sort elements by materials, groups to cluster elements by location.

Create a symbol library with at least 4 symbols and one nested symbol. Render the symbols by themselves, then show the model two ways: replacing at least one of symbols to create a variant.

Develop the model using Boolean operations to complement the assemblage of symbols.

Part I
Working with Symbols

1. Create a new libary to store your own symbols. Open the Symbols Paletteclicking on the word Library, then selecting New in the dialog box

2. Create new symbols with the S-Create icon:

  • Select geometry
  • Select S-Create icon
  • Locate handle
  • Assign name

3. Place symbols with the S-Place icon

  • Open Palette menu > Symbols
  • Load a Library
  • Select symbol
  • Select S-Place icon
  • Pick a location for the origin

Part II
Design Variations with Symbol Substitutions

Try substituting alternative forms for the design elements in order to see different ways of expressing your design idea.

1.  Backup the library. When you replace a symbol the original definition is changed and all copies change. In FormZ, the library is automatically changed and you CANNOT undo to go back to the old version.

In the Symbols Palette, click on the word Library to open a dialogue box.  Highlight the name of the library you will change and "save a copy as" a different filename.

2. Place a copy of the symbol you want to change at a grid intersection with the grid ON.

3. Explode the symbol that you want to change using the dynamite icon tool.

4. Modify the exploded pieces or delete them and create something new in the same location. For the new pieces to fit, they should be connect at the same critical points as the old one. Make sure the new component is the color you want it to be.

5. Select all the parts that make up the new component.

6. Choose the "create" tool with a rubber stamp icon, and click at the grid intersection where you originally placed the symbol, in the same view. In the dialog that appears, give the new component the same name as the original one had. If the resulting changes look bad, repeat steps 3 to 6.

7.  Render: Pick a strong view of each building and render it, saving the file in both FMZ model and JPG image formats. In Photoshop, crop the image and resize it to be less than 400 x 400 pixels.

8.  Compose and upload: Place at least one image of each model on your assign07.html page and upload the new image and HTML files to your university account. (you do not have to upload your FMZ file since it is not visible on the web).

Optional:
Optionally supplement your model with one of the kit of parts below.

A kit-of-parts is a set of components that can be fit together to create a building, like Legos. Five kit-of-parts systems have been prepared for you. The components from each system has been loaded as symbols into their own FormZ library. Each system has its own flavor or "style": classic, Gothic, hightech, space, and timber. Each FormZ library has six types of components: column, truss, roof, wall, corner, and floor.
The FormZ libraries can be downloaded here:

1. Download a FormZ model to your desktop or hard drive.

2. Create a new FormZ model from the file menu.

3. Set the grid size by choosing "window setup" from the window menu. Set X Module to be 4'-0" with 4 divisions, then click ok.

4. Set the snap option by choosing "snap options" from the window menu. Set the X Grid Snap Module to be 4'-0", then click ok.

5. Load the library by clicking on the word "library" on the symbol palette. In the dialog that appears, click on the "load" button. Choose the FormZ library you just downloaded.

6. Use the components to create architectural form by placing symbols from the library into your new model. Just select the "place" tool on the tool palette (has an icon like a stamp), select level 2 on the symbol palette, highlight the component you want, and click on the grid. The component will appear where you clicked. You can now move it around, copy it, rotate and mirror it.

7. When you finish, find a view to render, save as both FormZ FMZ model and JPG image.
