TITLE: Algebraic cycles on symmetric powers of curves

ABSTRACT I will discuss the structure of the groups of algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence over symmetric powers of a curve and their relation to similar groups for the Jacobian. I will briefly outline the relation with general "motivic" conjectures about algebraic cycles due to Bloch and Beilinson.
