Lifshitz family
from Poltava Guberniya The Lifshitz name has been spelled in a variety of ways, including Lipshitz, Lipschitz, Lipschutz, Lifshuts in English. I do not know which spelling was used in the Ukraine, where the family lived. They wrote in Russian, Yiddish and Hebrew, and possibly in Ukrainian and Polish as well. Avraham Lifshitz and his wife Zlata may have lived in Slutzk (1), which was then in Lithuania, but is now in Belarus. The family history says that his son, Chaim Lifshitz (~1776 - ?) "came from Slutzk in Lithuania when he was still young, and settled in Itchneh, district of Chernigov" Ukraine. According to the same family history, later generations of this Lifshitz family lived in or near Priluki/Priluky, in the part of the Russian Empire known as the Ukraine, in shtetls such as Arkenowke, Torkenaten, Serbne/Sribne, Lissahar, Demitrovke/Dmytrivka, Lozoyo, Lachwitz/Lochvycja , and Ichnya/Icnja. (Second name in set is current spelling: 1900 Yiddish/2005 Ukranian. See below for town information.) Many of these towns are now in the Chernigov Oblast. Records of marriages, births and deaths have been found in microfilms from Priluki, Nezhin, Borzna, and Ichnya. Much of the early information on the family was provided by Menachem Sambursky, who left the Ukraine around the turn of the century. He started keeping a journal when his first son was born in 1900 in Königsberg, East Prussia. When his father, Nissan-Eliezer Sambursky, came for a visit, before leaving for America in 1906, he told his son all he knew of both sides of the family history. Menachem wrote down this information in the back of his journal and updated sections over the years. His granddaughter, Shlomit, translated the family history in 1999 and provided the photo below.

Notes: dates with ~ in
front are approximate dates, best guesses and nothing more. In order to insure the privacy of relatives, I have tried to included only non-living relatives. If someone is included or excluded in error, please let me know and I will make changes. (1) The first mention of Lifshitz in Slutsk was in 1583. The following information comes from a toll book located in Brest, in which different goods brought through there are identified: "February 23, 1583, Ilya Lipchitz and Merkel Novakhovich, from Slutsk to Lublin, goods: simple local goat skins, ermine, fox, otter, badger, Russian leather, wild goat, wolf skins, elk, sable, marten. Goods with duty already paid in Orsha, in Cherchesk, in Mstislav and in Bobobruisk. A part of the goods to Lublin, and the rest to the Gneznenskii Fair April 15th." My great
grandparents left the Ukraine, Russia in 1890, with a passport issued
in Priluki. Information about the town of Priluki can be found at the JewishGen site. There are lists of people from Priluki/Pryluky who are buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery on the Museum of Family History web site. |
