Thin section view of a volcanic rock.  Note the fine-grained crystals that make up the groundmass, as
well as the coarse-grained phenocrysts.  This particular rock is a basalt--the large gray phenocrysts are
plagioclase, the small crystals are mostly plagioclase; the blue and gold-colored crystal in
the lower right is pyroxene.
