Furnace Creek Formation at Zabriskie Point.  The Furnace Creek Formation consists primarily of alluvial fan and playa deposits, shown here in the foreground and middle ground respectively.  It was deposited from about 6-4 Ma, in the Furnace Creek Basin, an extensional basin that formed along the Furnace Creek fault zone prior to opening of modern Death Valley.
