PREFACE to the 2006 fiftieth-anniversary internet
re-publication
by Alan Kimball (Editor)
It is humbling and inspiring to look back on this journalistic record of one full school year out on the great plains in the middle of the 1950s. What undisciplined exuberance! I am frequently embarrassed as editor, especially by one common example of lax discipline = the way we mangled people's names, our own fellow students. As I composed the electronic index of articles below, I could not resist comment on certain other issues that rankle me still, a half century after the events. And there are many other blemishes, some of them caused by difficult technical procedures involved in producing the publication, just about every Tuesday of the whole school year -- the issues ran front-and-back 2-, 3- or, once, 4-sheets.
And we published that paper ourselves, correcting stencil typos with slow-drying goop, repositioning the stencil in a proper typewriter, retyping as best as possible on the exact spot of the now gooped-over typo. We often knocked for late Monday night admission to the Derby Grade School where the only elementary-school big-font headline-writing typewriter was to be found, and where the only mimeograph machine in the system was located. We worked hard.
And it is even more amazing that we, as a whole student-body, did all those other things recorded on the nearly 170 pages of Panther's Tale. Of course there was teacherly supervision. And teachers were given much attention, largely affectionate, only rarely critical. You will see on these pages, however, that we frequently ducked supervision even as it was gently imposed on us.
But look at what everyone was doing, contemplate this collective biography of a certain cohort, a certain generation of young folks, freshmen to seniors. For example, the index pulls together all the special "Senior of the Week" and "Pantherman" profiles. Carefully read with a certain objective eye between the lines, these profiles, even when often stiffly structured in a standard template, are little windows on the past. So often captives of surrounding pop-art or commercial culture, we do regularly show an active instinct for authenticity. Here and elsewhere, there is more than at first meets the eye, though even at first glance the wholesome exuberance gushes forth and soothes the gaucherie and undiscipline.
The staff of the 1955-1956 Panther's Tale offers this website as a reunion gift to the following groups of fellow DHS students, on the scene in the year of this paper's publication =
the Class of 1956 (seniors)
the Class of 1957 (juniors)
the Class of 1958 (sophomores)
the Class of 1959 (freshmen)
The originals of this newspaper were too deteriorated to scan directly into searchable electronic text. Therefore, the pages are here presented as jpeg images. The indexes here take you to whole pages where the indexed item must be sought out. Searching and reading these whole pages is best when the zoom function is employed.
Explore this webpage, play with it as if it were a personally relevant "Dungeons and Dragons". Here you might go through an occasional "wrong door", but you will eventually discover us again, sometimes completely forgotten, often surprising, but at the same time always familiar and, on the whole, likeable.
Special thanks to Ms. Madeline Moyer who helped photocopy the crumbling yellow and faded originals.
