Friends of Women in Mathematics

This organization began as a group of mathematics graduate students at UCLA who banded together to help improve our graduate experience. In a profession traditionally dominated by men, they thought it wise to form a group that focused on the concerns of female graduate students.

Initially, the goals of FOWM were to create a support group for women mathematicians, to help recruit graduate students, particularly women, and to finance trips to conferences. They have hosted several parties to add spark and fun to their jobs of studying and doing research.

The duties and scope of the group have expanded; for example, FOWM ran a workshop on applying for fellowships. At their request, faculty seminars have been re-instituted. These hour long talks by UCLA faculty members are designed to inform graduate students of the active areas of mathematical research at UCLA and help them find an advisor. In the spring, FOWM will host a workshop on applying for jobs in academia. FOWM is creating a resource of information and time-saving tools for the use of all graduate students in the job application process.

They think that the UCLA mathematics department is excellent, both academically and socially. We are being trained by superior mathematicians to do research, and it is our intent to enrich the educational and social atmosphere at UCLA.

While FOWM may primarily focus on promoting women in math at the graduate level, all interested UCLA students are encouraged to join their organization.
