(School of) Music and Dance
Completed in 2008

The School of Music and Dance project involved an approximately 30,000 sf addition that includes a 3-story structure. It is oriented north-south and tucked into the hillside on the east and the ground plane rolls up and over it via an eco-roof. The first floor classrooms are daylit with roof motitors. The floors above contain faculty teaching studios oriented east-west in order to achieve optimal solar orientation and eliminate the acoustical problem of music-making space with operable windows that are oriented toward the existing buidling. The addition also includes a northern one-story, large volume rehearsal space that is oriented north-south in response to the steep hillside on the west. The architects collaborated with the UO's Energy Studies in Building Laboratory to modify the building envelope to incorporate shading, overhangs, and window modifications (glazing selections).
