MEMO TO: Dave Hubin (Executive Assistant to the President)
MEMO FROM: Peter B Gilkey (Senate President 1999/2000)
MEMO RE: Distinguished Service Committee
DATE: 02 January 2000

Dear Dave:

This is just to confirm in writing our informal conversation during December 1999. As you know, University of Oregon Policy Statement 1.000 Administrative Organization and Procedures discusses current UO Policy regarding granting of honorary degrees. There is no similar policy statement for the distinguished service award. Furthermore, the policy statement currently posted on the web does not really accurately reflect the current procedure we follow. So I am going to ask you as chair of the DSA to convene the committee sometime in January 2000 and ask the committee to write an amended policy statement that deals with both the policy for granting honorary degrees and the policy for the distinguished service awards and which accurately reflects the current procedures which we actually follow. I would hope the committee could bring a proposed revised policy statement back to the UO Senate for approval by the  8 March 2000 meeting of the UO Senate - I have created a tentative agenda item for the committee report at that meeting of the UO Senate. (The DSA committee is scheduled to make a report to the March 8 meeting of UO Senate regarding potential awards of the DSA so it seems appropriate to schedule this other item of business from the DSA for that meeting as well).
